• Sales of trucks and artics last year were 34% down on 1990, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. A total of 32,184 trucks were bought, compared with 48,545 in the previous year. At 209,021, sales of all commercial vehicles fell by 29%.

Leyland Daf topped the league for truck and artic sales with 7,686, followed by Iveco Ford with 6,883 and Mercedes-Benz with 5,270.
