Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• In your news item "F'12s to get Jake Brake" (CM 5-11 Dec 1991), it was stated that Volvo Trucks had approved the retrofit of the Jake Brake to engines fitted to the F12 truck.

Could I point out that while we knew of an impending announcement, this should not and cannot be taken as our formal approval. The fact that such an endorsement has not been forthcoming is not a criticism, implied or otherwise, of the Jake Brake. It simply means that if proprietary fitments have not been tested by Volvo Trucks, the company will not approve them. It necessarily follows that potential and existing owners contemplating fitment of Jake Brakes to F12s should be made aware that any liability arising from the retrofit, including consequential loss, would rest with the Jacobs Vehicle Equipment Company or its appointed agents, not with Volvo Trucks or its appointed agents.

Trevor Longcroft, Public relations manager, Volvo Trucks (Great Britain).

The information with regard to the Jake Brake's approval from Volvo came from Jake — Ed.
