Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• It's a pound to a centime that the mob of Marseilles dockers who attacked three UK truck drivers after they'd questioned if they'd been given a full load have never read the front of a British Passport.

Never mind that the bearer should "pass freely without let or hindrance", it was a case of "allez mes amis, let's bash a Brit." And what were the French dock authorities doing when things got nasty? They followed the same tactic as the dynamic Spanish police when local hauliers went on the rampage two years ago by doing sweet FA.

It's fast becoming a popular pan-European pastime. French farmers attack British drivers. Spanish hauliers attack British drivers. Italian bandits attack British drivers. Anybody else want to have a go at the Brits?

Which begs the question, what is the Foreign Office doing about these attacks? What it ought to be doing is telling other Community countries that the next time it happens their hauliers will be refused entry into the UK. Some hope.

Instead of telling us how much meat should be in a British banger all those committed Europeans should be ensuring that truck drivers of all nationalities are free to carry out their business across Europe without let, hindrance or being assaulted by knife-wielding mobs. Just like in Britain.
