Speaking to American magazine Transport Topics,

the Pig Hip's founder Ernie Edwards says: "I got to be 75 years old and my wife is 70 and we just decided we were worn out and tired and quit."

A pity as this year is the 66th anniversary of Route 66 and Ernie's restaurant in Broadwell, Illinois could benefit from travel promotions to celebrate the Chicago to Los Angeles highway.

The restaurant coined its name after a farmer eyeing a large ham asked for a "pig hip sandwich" — it became a legend in its own lunchtime, served with Ernie's special Jell-0 sauce and french fries.
