DRRY DRIVER Ronald Cain was jailed for 18 months and banned om driving for ten years by Carlisle Crown Court, which convicted im of causing the deaths of four people by reckless driving.

Defending, David Boulton said the accident happened on markings in the centre of the road on the A66 near Keswick. It was accepted that Cain's vehicle should not have been there but he asked the jury to convict Cain on lesser charges of driving without due care and attention and find him not guilty of the charges of causing death by reckless driving. The jury unanimously found Cain guilty of all four reckless driving charges.

Sentencing Cain, Judge Ian Webster said it was the worst case of its kind he had come across in the 31 years he had spent in the legal profession. The defendant should be thankful that he was not facing a charge of manslaughter.
