Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE INDUSTRIAL ACTION taken by ASLEF this week to obtain a three per cent increase was totally irresponsible. It should be recognised as such by industry, commerce and the travelling public.

The action highlighted some aspects of rail operation which lie dormant in times of industrial peace. How can a trade union condone, at any time, overtime and restday Working but especially today when there are 3,000,000 unemployed?

Does ASLEF really believe that BR can afford another three per cent without increased productivity when the service is being subsidised to the tune of £2m every day?

Can users of railway services continue to employ them with confidence or might they not now believe that defection to road services might be to their advantage?

Certainly, road operators have the facilities, the ability and the flexibility to cope with any increase in freight demand which may develop. The public would do well to remember how the railway servants have treated them before they once again whine about road transport.

The road operators should not lose any opportunity to press their case. They can be assured that if the boot were on the other foot, the rail lobby would capitalise on it.
