Following the success of its No. 376 Armature Spring Compressor introduced two years ago. Sykes-Pickavant is now marketing an additional tool of similar design but designed to fit larger starters in the Lucas M45G and M41 8G ranges.
This new tool—the No. 366 —provides an efficient method of removing safely and quickly the awkward butt-ended wire circlip which retains the armature spring in position on the shaft. To use, the jaws of the compressor are opened and placed over the spring after easing the pinion back with the finger and thumb. When in position, the two halves of the tool are compressed by tightening the adjusting bolts with a box spanner provided.
With the spring tension relieved, a screwdriver can be used to lever out the circlip and if the spring is to be used again it can be left compressed in the tool. When reassembling the starter, the reverse end of the special box spanner is used as an inserter to push the circlip into the groove.
