Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An extra ton of payload capacity per vehicle, within a legal gross weight of 30 tons, is claimed by a Somerset quarrying company as a result of specifying Pengco monocoque light-alloy bodies on 10 of its tipping semi-trailers.

The bodies are designed on the stressed-skin principle and constructed throughout of aluminium alloy, in the form of folded sections, and plate welded together, without any longitudinal beams under the floor.

The 26ft long bodies were built and equipped with Edbro twin-ram tipping gear by Peterborough Engineering Co. Ltd.. Oxney Road, Peterborough, on tandemaxle York trailer chassis. All other hydraulic equipment is carried on the Volvo F86 units to which the trailers are coupled. The outer-axle spread of each outfit is 33ft, qualifying for operation at 30 tons gross, at which the payload margin is a clear 20 tons. Their operator, Foster Yeoman Ltd., is currently working these tippers round the clock from its quarries at Dulcote and Merchead. near Shepton Mallet, to supply roadstone for a motorway contract in the Gloucester area.
