• As each year brings more rules and regulations into the life of transport operators, so the value of the FTA Year Book increases. The 1970 edition, just published, is over 200 pages thick, and much of the vast collection of legislation which it summarizes is new. Every Freight Transport Association member receives one copy free; further copies are available at 35s each from the Association at Sunley House, Bedford Park, Croydon CR9 1XU.
This year, of course, the book contains sections which have been completely revised to include details of new regulations stemming from the Transport Act 1968, while entirely new sections are devoted to metric conversions and the NFC /BR conditions of carriage.
The way in which the Year Book treats legislation and regulations is extremely useful for busy operators, listing the 1969-70 legislation and cross-referring to the pages on which each item is dealt with in detail. The summaries of regulations are themselves very clear and helpful, but it could be an improvement to specify by name the actual statutory instrument from which they are extracted. This is done in some cases, but not all.
The book is not confined to legislation, dominant though this aspect inevitably is. It lists ferry operators, police authorities, toll bridges and tunnels, for example, and devotes sections to international operations and the PTA's own services. B.C.
