MR, W. L. RUSSELL, Midland divisional engineer of the Road Haulage Executive, has been appointed general manager of Dundee Transport Department. Before joining the R.H.E., he was deputy general manager of Stockton-on-Tees Transport Department for four years, having earlier been with Edinburgh Transport Department.

MR. W. COOLING, A.M.I.Mech.E., has been appointed chief designer of Leyland Motors, Ltd., a position which has been in abeyance since MR. N. TATTERSALL was appointed acting chief engineer in 1950. A former student of Leeds University, Mr. Cooling has been in the heavy-vehicle industry all his working life. lie joined Leyland in 1935, and some three years later was transferred to the research division on engine development. In 1945 he was placed in charge of the company's engine-development drawing office and has been closely associated with the design of post-war Leyland oil engines. For the past two years he has been a member of the committee of the northwestern section of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Automobile • Division). MR. GEORGE HILEY, South Lines

representative of the Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., for the past 33 years, has retired.

MR. W. H. GRAN has been appointed home sales manager of Raybestos-_ Belaco, Ltd. He was formerly with the Road Haulage Executive. MR. W. Lowe is to become Midland sales manager. They take up their positions on February 1.

MR. ROBERT BARR, chairman and managing director of the Robert Barr and Wallace Arnold Trust, Ltd., completed 50 years in transport on Monday. He was fated on Tuesday at the annual dinner of the Institute of Transport's Yorkshire branch, of which he is chairman.

MR. J. P. A. MELDRUM, 0.B.E., B.Sc., M.I.E.E., has become home-sales manager of the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., MR. A. E. GiumsoatE, B.Sc. (Eng.), has been appointed special assistant, sales management, and MR. J. C. WAY, A.M.I.E.E., A.M.1.Loco.E., sales manager, traction department.

MR. H. A. DAVIS. joint general manager of Brown Brothers, Ltd., has been appointed general manager (motor), and MR. R. TURNER assistant general manager (motor). They will have the immediate services of two sales-promotion managers. MR. J. J. STRATTON (garage equipment) and Ma. R. ALUM (motor). MR. E. G. SPEARING has been appointed sales manager and MR. H. W. BOXALL assistant sales manager. MR. C. G. ARMSTRONG has become manager of the company's tyre division and MR. S. W. HILLYARD manager of the Acton branch. MR. D. PREMIER-GRADE motor spirit to be marketed by Shell-Mex and B.P., Ltd., will cost 3d. per gallon more than ordinary grades, the prices of which will be the same as for Pool petrol (4s. 2d.-4s. 3id.). The high-octane petrols to be sold by the company will be known as Shell and B.P. Super.
