Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

This journal is extensively read by the heads of many wealthy commeseial houses.

There will be no commercial vehicles at the Scottish Motor Show which will open, on the 24th inst., at Waverley Market, Edinburgh.

Topical Subjects.

Our leading articles this week deal with the following topical subjects: (1) " The Bulk Transport of Benzol or Petrol by Road in Motor Tank-wagon ; " (2) "The Taxicab Strike ; " and (3) " Big Demands for Benzol."

Parcel Delivery.

Railway companies are carrying out their parcel collecting and delivery in the Provinces by means of motorvans. A considerable lead, as was reported by us at the time, was given by the Great Western Railway Co., some 3i years ago. We have already mentioned and illustrated the employment of two Lacre vans, by the L. and Y. Railway, to and from Victoria Station, Manchester. A Lancashire correspondent of this journal is responsible for the further information which is published on page 404.

The Reverse as a Brake.

We have reason to believe that the memorandum which was drawn up by the Editor of this journal], on

thalf of the Commercial Mott-, Users Association, and lodged with the Local Government Board, in July last (for text, see issue of the 11th July, 1912, page 428), will have resulted, before the end of the present month, in the desired modification of the regulation under which there is at the present time a doubt as to the legal fulfilment of the second-brake requirement by a reversible steam engine.

Military Subvention Trials.

Our references of last week, in the course of our forecastfor the year 1913, to the subject of -the terms that are offered by the British War Office for the registration of new motor vehicles which have been constructed to particular specifications, has prompted the communication of an article (pages 402 and 40:1) by an engineer-contributor. This writer, who is possessed of great experience and is well known throughout the industry, prefers to remain anonymous in relation to this article, which goes even farther than we did in the view that the scheme is far removed from the ideal, whilst it endorses our opinion that purchasers for commercial use will not be financial gainers in the end for their adhesion.

Tender for Municipal Van.

Stoke-on-Trent Borough Council wants tenders, at an early date, for a motorvan with two interchangeable bodies, for the purpo. of the removal of articles for disinfection. Manufacturers are invited to address the Medical Officer of Health, Glebe Street, Stoke-onTrent, for further particulars.

Where to Buy Benzol.

The appended list of benzol suppliers is published by us for the immediate guidance of readers who may wish to give a trial to the fuel. Benzol of the 90 per cent. variety should be ordered, and the sulphur content should not exceed 100 grains to the gallon. The less sulphur there is the better, but records of consumption over a long term of years satisfy us that the ordinary 90 per cent. benzol, which may contain anything from 90 to 120 grains per gallon, does not per se harm an ordinary internalcombustion engine.

Benzol and Paraffin.

G. C. Vaporizer, Ltd., of 11, Hart Street, Bloomsbury, W.C., communicated to us last week, too late for publication, some particulars about the use of its vaporizer with mixtures of benzol and paraffin. These fuels may be mixed in practically any proportions, but it appears that the use of 10 per cent. of benzol by Volume is the best. for engines of 30 11T. and upwards.

A Haulage Contract Going.

Some building-contractor friends of ours are desirous of arranging for the haulage of at least 500 tons a day of building material, It will be necessary to employ tip wagons, and the removal would have to commence about the middle of February. The maximum haul would be five miles.

We shall be happy to place anyone who is in. a position to undertake such contract by motor wagon in touch with these people.

Other Types of Engines Ready.

The Commercial and Marine Engine Co., to whose new type of engine we made illustrated reference in a recent issue, advises us that it is now in a position to deliver the"two sizes of engine, viz., the 35 h.p. and the 45 h.p. types of motors to .which specific reference was then made by us. Moreover. a complete range of engines, varying in sizes from 4 h.p. to 100 h.p., will shortly be ready. Parts of the other sizes are already well i.n hand.

The usual thorough arrangements will be made by TEE COMMERCIAL MOTOR to work up interest in the Show before it opens, and to report it completely when the exhibits are on view.

Cabling for Another Turbine.

The Sydney (N.S.W.) Brigade has cabled an order for another Dennis turbine fire-engine, and the fact that this Australian city has again preferred the turbine pattern to the old ram-pump pattern should have the effect of convincing rampump advocates that the day of the turbine pump has really arrived.
