The takeover of UK parcels firm Lynx Express by US giant UPS has

been smooth so far — but that might change. Guy Sheppard reports.

A STRIKE is looming at Lynx Express following its takeover by global parcels giant UPS.

The RMT union, which repre sents 200 drivers and 400 handling sta ff a t Lynx, accuses the company of dragging its feet in pay and pension talks. In a letter to members, RIOT general secretary Bob Crow claims Lynx has failed to clear up rumours that its pension plan was in deficit at the time of the acquisition.

We sought assurances about their future plans for the pension as well as seeking guarantees that they would not increase employee's contributions," he says. "To date we have received no such assurances."

He adds that, despite numerous requests for pay talks, the company failed to meet the union before a new pay deal was due to come into force on I January.

Discussions have now started hut a 3% offer to drivers has been rejected Crow warns that much more needs to be done to equalise pay with UPS workers: "If there is no progress with the company on either of these issues we may have to ballot all Lynx members for strike action."

UPS bought Lynx for f.55m last July (CM 28 July 2005). A spokesman says it expects to reach a satisfactory agreement through the established negotiating framework: "UPS is careful to consider the unions' viewpoints along with the interests of our customers, employees, shareholders and our company as a whole."
