Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Brian Weatherley • Scania plans to extend the use of turbocompounding and electronic diesel control across its engine range.

The only turbocompound truck engine currently on sale in Europe is Scania's 11-litre DTC1101 straightsix, rated at 400hp (299kW). But Lars Orehall, vice-president in charge of powertrain development, has told CM that the company is already running trucks with turbocompound versions of other Scania engines.

Scania's 14-litre veeengine is the next likely candidate for turbocompounding. Orehall stresses that "it would be feasible" on the nine-litre engine, not least to provide better emissions, "but we wouldn't see it as a longhaul option", he adds.

In the run up to next October's Euro-2 emissions deadline, Scania will increase its use of the Bosch Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) fuel management system. So far EDC is only offered on the 380/ 400hp 11-litre and 500hp 14-litre engines; Orehall predicts that more electronics will be a feature of high horsepower engines. "What is governing electronics is Euro-2," he says.

The EDC engines could make an appearance as part of the long-awaited new Scania truck range which is expected next year.

Following the news that MAN is to launch a 600hp version of its vee-10 engine in September, Orehall says that Scania is capable of meeting the demand for even more horsepower in premium tractors but insists that such business "is very marginal".

The highest truck rating on the DSC14-litre engine is 500hp but in marine applications it is rated at up to 675hp. Orehall says: "We could add a 600hp tractor immediately, if that's necessary, but I don't think that's what the market wants."
