THE GOVERNMENT'S proposal to abolish Vehicle Excise Duty on petrol-driven vehicles and replace it with an increased fuel tax could increase the total tax outlay incurred by commercial operators, according to Merseyside Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In a letter to the Transport Secretary, the Chamber says that its Surface Transport Committee considers the Department of Transport calculations to be inaccurate. Petrol-driven commercial vans of a typical unladen weight of 14 tons cover a much greater mileage than the Department of Transport estimates, and because of increased fuel tax could be incurring an extra £130 a year when the changeover is fully implemented.
