THE LONG-awaited G-range from Mercedes Benz is announced today. This is a four wheel drive machine which has been developed in conjunction with Steyr-DaimlerPuch in Austria.
It will go on sale in a number of European countries during 1979 but will not be available in right hand drive form until next year.
There is a choice of four, five and six cylinder engines with the type number indicating the cubic capacity, eg. the 300GD is a three litre diesel.
The range will consist of a total of 40 versions including six different types of body and two wheel bases — 2.4 and 2.85 metres (7ft 10ins and 9ft 4ins).
Aimed at the Range Rover/ Jeep "go anywhere" market the G-range uses engines from the Mercedes Benz car range and the steering assembly from the light vans.
The axles bodies and transfer box are completely new.
Frontal bodywork items have been easy to repair while the separate chassis frame is claimed to have advantages of easy assembly in third world countries.
Full details of the new range will be in next week's CM.
