NATIONAL CARRIERS showed a small net profit in 1978 for the first time in their history.
This was helped by the effects of the 1978 Transport Act, which relieved the company of some of the historical charges it had acquired from its former association with British Rail.
The actual trading profit last year, National Carriers' tenth anniversary, was £2.6m, and compares with a rate of loss of £20m in their first year of trading.
Net profit after interest payments and all other charges was £30,000, compared with a net loss of £5.7m in 1977. National Carriers' gross turnover last year was up about £11m to just under £100m.
The growing success of the company's specialised distribution services has accounted for much of National Carriers' improved performance, Brian Hayward, managing director said on Monday.
