Only one British manufacturer of heavy goods vehicles failed to sell more in the first 11 months of 1978 than in 1977. I offer no prize for the correct solution. Ford captured nearly half the 5,907 additional sales by British makers, as recorded by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Although two importers of heavy lorries fell short of their 1977 performance, imports rose by 3,365 to 12,297, with Volvo well in the lead with 3,585, Mercedes-Benz second with 2,325 and DAF third with 1,625. What would British operators do without them?
