VIERCEDES-BENZ has an-Jounced plans to build an Assembly plant for commercial vehicles in the United States. The plant will be in Hampton, Virginia and is due to start 3roduction some time next year.
Parts for assembly will be ;hipped in from the Mercedes3enz works in Brazil. The :ompany says the American )1ant will initially produce ;ome 4,000 vehicles per year in he nine to 14-tonne range. ['his is planned to rise to 6,000 rehicles per year by 1981. Ex:ess land has been purchased )n the site to allow for such Urther expansion.
The project has a capital nvestment cost of $6.6m £3.3m), and the highly iutomated plant will provide 60 jobs when it first opens.
