Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ON TRAILING ARMS PATENT Na. 881,196 I shows a heavy-duty bogie in which the suspension comprises airbags guided by trailing arms. The axles are of the stub type and each carries twin wheels.

(Cranes (Dereham), Ltd., South Green Works, Dereham, Norfolk.)

In the drawing, a front arm (1) is pivoted on a frame bracket (2). The arm carries at its rear end one of the stub axles. A similar arm (3) is pivoted at (4) and carries the rear stubaxle. It is also provided with a portion (5) projecting forwards and fitted with a plate (6).

A similar plate (7) is fixed to the fore axle and an air-spring (8) is compressed between the two, thus forming a compensated suspension. Pressure control valves (not shown) are incorporated and the air-bags contain rubber buffers to limit the deflection. Hydraulic damping cylinders (9) are also provided, although their use is said to be optional. The trailing arms may be inclined outwardly.
