ACRANE suitable for mounting on commercial-vehicle chassis with load capacity of at least eight tons is now available from Brown and Tawse Plant, Ltd., Ambrose Street, Manchester, 12. The crane was originally developed for naval use and is called the Hydrocon Admiral.
Its capacity is 5 tons at 10 ft. radius on a 24-ft. jib. The jib can be extended to 56 ft., and 2+ tons at a 15-ft. radius can then be handled. The complete crane unit is mounted on a fabricated base which fits directly on to the vehicle chassis through a slewing ring which is, in fact, a ball race, 6 ft. 9 in. in diameter. Power Cleaner Floors 'THE disadvantages of present methods of keeping floors in factories and garages clean and free from oil are said _ to be overcome with Grannie Oil Absorbent, a product recently introduced by Sternol, Ltd., Royal London House. Finsbury Square,' London, E.C.2. ' The suggested method of us:ng this is to spread a layer of the crystals on the floor to a depth o,f about in. Oil on the floor will then be absorbed immediately.
Where floors are heavily oil impregnated, traffic will cause the Grannie crystals to be driven into the floor, breaking down the oil film which can then be swept up with a stiff brush 24 to 48 hours later, denend;ng on the degree of impregnation.
Grannie is claimed to give floors a non-slip coating, to be non-inflammable, and non-corrosive. It costs fl 10s. for a 56 lb. bag.
High-lift Stillage Truck A MODEL for stillages has been added ri to the range of Skysorlift elevating trolleys made by Farrow and Jackson, Ltd., 41/2 Prescot Street, London, E.1. The standard model, which has a minimum height of 6 in., and can be raised to a maximum of 3 ft.' 1 in., has a carrying capacity of 10 cwt., with a platform length of 4 ft. 2 in., and an overall width of 2 ft. The pump unit and castor section add a further 8 in. to the overall length.
The trolley has four 4-in, diameter wheels, two fixed at the front inside the platform area, and two swivelling castor wheels at the back. Cast iron, rubber or any other type of wheel can be specified. A dual-displacement hydraulic pump is employed to give varying outputs of hydraulic fluid, according to the weight of the load. With an empty stillage, a force of 30 lb., would raise the platform at a particular speed, but with a heavily loaded stillage, -and the same force, the
for the crane is provided by A Ford diesel engine mounted as a unit with its own radiator on the face of the crane.
An important point of the design of the crane is that a load of 5 tons can be lifted without the need for jacks or outriggers on the vehicle chassis. The ballast block does not swing outside the vehicle width.
raising speed would be reduced. A manually controlled release valve allows an infinitely variable control of the lowering speed.
Various sizes are available and both roller-conveyor and turntable tops are made. Special versions can also be produced according to requirements.
Water-thinned Paints QTOVING paints which can be thinned
with water, instead of the more usual expensive solvents, are now being made by most British paint manufacturers, the basic material used• being Epok resin, which is supplied by British Resin Products, Ltd.
Primer paints based on Epok resin are claimed to offer greatly improved corm
sion resistance, excellent adhesion, good flexibility and good rubbing down properties. In addition, these primers can be applied to damp surfaces with a considerable saving in time over other methods of painting. Epok-based gloss coats are said to offer outstanding resistance to marring, good gloss and flow, excellent colour retention on overstoving, „good adhesion and flexibility.
A leaflet on these water-soluble paints and the names of paint makers selling them can be obtained from British Resin Products, Ltd., and a film dealing with the paints entitled 'With Thinners on Tap " has been produced for the concern. The film is available on free loan from the film library of Distillers • Plastics Group, Devonshire House, Piccadilly, London, W.1.
