Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHEN Reading Transport Department applied to extend one of their routes before the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners in Reading last Friday, Mr. M. A. B. King-Hamilton, Q.C., for the Corporation, said the Thames Valley Traction Co., Ltd., who objected, would not have done so if negotiations between the two operators for co-ordination of services had not broken down.

"Had agreement been reached or had negotiations still been going on there would have been no objection from Thames Valley. But very much to the regret of the Corporation the company broke off negotiations, and the objection had come in on the grounds that the company already provide transport in the area, and the proposed extension would have an adverse effect on their operation," he added.

In turn the Corporation objected to a Thames Valley application to divert their Reading to Woodley service through the Maiden Erlegh estate. It was also opposed by Berkshire County Council. Wokingham Rural District Council and Earley Parish Council.

Granting the Thames Valley application for an experimental period of one year from June 29, the chairman, Mr. H. J. Thom, said that if, after then, the inhabitants of the estate could advance reasons for taking the service off, the Commissioners would hear them.

The Corporation's application was also granted.
