I—% A NEW range of cross-country 4 x 4

vehicles is announced by Leyland Motors, Ltd. Based on current Leyland Comet forward-control models, they are converted by All Wheel Drive, Ltd., Camberley.

The chassis are available in three wheelbase lengths: 14 ft. 9 in., 13 ft. 8 in, and 9 ft. 11 in., and may be fitted with right-hand or left-hand driving controls. The power unit fitted is the Leyland 0.370 Power-Plus 110 b.h,p. engine and the gross laden weight rating is 12 tons for on-the-road work and 9+ tons for continuous cross-country running.

The five-speed direct-top gearbox fitted to standard Comet models is retained and the drive is taken by a short propeller shaft to an All Wheel Drive auxiliary gearbox which splits the drive to the front and rear axles and provides a low ratio of 2.105 to 1 as well as a high ratio of 1 to 1.

An optional full-torque power take7offwith its own oil pump can be fitted either on top or on one side of the auxiliary gearbox.

The centre section of the driven front axle, complete with spiral-bevel final_

drive and differential gears, is based on a-standard Leyland unit and the gearing itself is directly interchangeable with that of the rear axle.

Relatively long springs are used, with helper springs on the rear axle and dampers on the front as standard equipment. The hydraulically operated brakes are fitted with Hydrovac assistance on standard chassis, although Air-Pak braking is available as an option.

Other features include 10.00-20 (12 ply) Trakgrip tyres; spare wheel and carrier on the two long-wheelbase models (optional extra on the shortwheelbase model which is intended for tipper work); 24-gal. fuel tank; 24-volt electrical equipment, and an all-steel cab of the standard Leyland Vista-Vue type which is completely undersealed during manufacture.

In addition to items already mentioned, optional equipment available includes power steering, an extra fuel tank, drawbar and trailer brake equipment, and an external sun visor. Marketing of the new vehicles is being handled by Leyland Motors, Ltd.
