OME time ago we described the interesting petrol-driven
truck evolved for inter-works transport by the Laycock Engineering Co., of Sheffield. Built to give ease of control and capable of handling loads up to 25 cwt., the Lodemor truck, as it is called, has proved very suCcessful•, it is available in various forms ranging in price from £125 to £150, according to type. Particularly useful is the elevating pattern for works use, in which the flat platform can be run underneath stillage and can then be elevated mechanically in order to .pick up the load.
On a recent visit to the 'extensive Layeock factory, where these trucks are made, we were given a demonstration of their handiness for work o.n a congested floor. The tiller steering control for the single front wheel provides for a turning radius of 7 ft. 6 ins., and the transmission incorporates an easily operated two-speed gearbox; then again, the air-cooled engine is controlled by a single lever. The platform of the elevating mcdel is ingeniously operated, through a gear rtduction of 1,000 to 1, from the gearbox. These trucks are well built and the machined parts show a good standard of workmanship.
An entirely new model, only recently introduced, is a gritter for use on tho roads, and this has attracted favourable comment from surveyors. It carries a hopper with a capacity of 35 cwt. of grit, and the material is evenly distributed by means of chain-driven rollers ; the rate of feed can be regulated. It has a powerful two-,cylindered air-cooled engine.
