Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

to rise by nearly 2% above inflation following hauliers' first ever mass wage agreement over the £4-an hourmark for a 40-hour week.

The 32% increase for drivers agreed by the southern area Joint Industrial Council last week follows a year's wage freeze in the area covering Kent, Sussex, Oxon, Berks, Hants, Dorset and parts of Surrey and Wilts.

Unions are now recommending the deal to members. The southern area agreement takes pay for consenting hauliers' drivers from £155 to £160 for a 32-tonner driver: overnight allowance rises by 50p.

Negotiations in the seven remaining JICs are under way: eastern region union officers are understood to be particularly anxious to push a deal through. Drivers in the area have not been awarded a pay increase through the JIC for four years.

Their pay stands at .C14232 a week for 30 to 32-tonner drivers.
