Scotland are posing no threat to rail freight because the railways just cannot match the schedules.
British Rail Scottish general manager, Leslie Sloane, said the lorries could load and drive iii-the Netherlands in 48 hours.
He said there would be no problem if there was a regular flow of traffic to justify a special train, but because of the seasonal nature and the volume of the loads it was not practical. Mr Sloane was aske whether it was practicable t use rail transport in preferenc to road, so that some effo could be made to keep heav Dutch vehicles away from tF narrow roads at Mallaig, We Scotland.
