KHE 8-tonner with Leyland 0.400 engine and five-speed overdrive gearbox. Could! fit a six-speed gearbox? I have been told by a Bedford dealer that this is not possible.
AYour Bedford dealer is quite correct. Bedfords do not offer a six-speed gearbox in the KHE. While it may not be impossible to fit a six-speed gearbox to this chassis there are limitations as to cost and practicability in any conversion. In this particular case Leyland do offer a six-speed gearbox behind the 0.400 engine which could therefore provide a solution. But, to put this unit in your Bedford would no, doubt necessitate modifications to the gear change and linkage, and the clutch and linkage while there may be a need to alter the frame also. All this would be costly and possibly time-wasting particularly if the conversion proved not to be as satisfactory as was hoped.
