Space protector burglar alarm

FIRST completely portable burglar alarm is the Vedette, which also detects fire. It is 12 in. high by 12 in. wide by 6 in. deep and is a self-contained "spaceprotector-type" alarm, incorporating receiver, transmitter and warning in one cabinet.

It is connected to the mains supply but has stand-by batteries, with a life of three days without recharging. No installation or maintenance is required.

Apprentice aid

"A,WAYS use the correct size, type and length of spanner for the particular job; spanners that slip often result in personal injury", says Motor Vehicle Technology and Practical Work. This book has been written by J. A. Dolan, AMSE., AMIED., to cover Part 1 of the City and Guilds of London Institute Syllabus for motor vehicle mechanics and the first year of the technician's course.

The introduction to workshop practice and problems encountered will be appreciated by all who read this book, especially the first-year apprentice who normally relies on the "journeyman" for knowledge, and unfortunately these craftsmen are gradually disappearing from the workshops.

Price: 15s. IELD Pneumatics introduces its Meiji Model MC, a lightweight heavy-duty industrial spray gun. The unit includes cup and syphon and comes complete with instruction sheets, spare parts lists and tool kit.

Weighing less than 23 oz. this new aluminium model is designed for, among other things, high-quality spraying operations in garages and factories. A special feature is the spray head which comes in two pieces, the air cap and material. No air distribution ring is necessary and its simplicity means there is nothing to go wrong. Uneven fan spread is eliminated and the spray width and pattern can be varied by means of an easily accessible high-adjustment screw. The connection is a + in. BSP hose connector.

The cup supplied (Field Pneumatics Al) will hold 1 litre of paint. It is fitted to the lid in a single operation by means of a quick release boss screw locking device.

Chemical ice melter

MARKETED for the first time in Britain is a chemical that melts ice and snow and can keep key areas clear during winter. Called Ice-Foe, it generates enough heat sufficient to melt even compacted snow or ice. It acts best on busy surfaces and is harmless to vegetation, tyres, footwear, asphalt roads and—particularly important —will not attack wings, as salt does.

Ice-Foe, in granulated form is available in cartons of six 5 lb. sealed polythene bags, or in 100 lb. polythene-lined drums. 100 lb. is sufficient to treat up to 3,000 sq. yd., depending on the depth of snow and ice, temperature and other conditions.

Supplied by: Cooper, McDougall and Robertson, Ravens Lane, Berkhamsted, Herts.

Price: Carton of six 5 lb. packs-60s.; 100 lb. drums-150s.

Waste oil burner

.11. RANSPORT users, garages and work

shops with a regular supply of waste oil will be interested in the CHB Major, the latest heater added to the Anderton models. Robustly constructed and trouble-free it meets the safety requirement of most fire brigade and insurance companies.

It is a fixture and weighs 3.5 cwt. and cannot be knocked over, and, if water is accidentally mixed with the waste oil, there is no risk of backfire or explosion—the heater automatically extinguishes itself. Flue gases are discharged outside the building by means of a stack, the length and diameter of which are not critical.

Field tests have shown that the heater will operate in wind gusts up to 60 m.p.h. It is designed for operation in larger space, developing an output of 120,000 b.t.u. sufficient to heat a total conventional radiator panel of 650 sq. ft. The noise during operation is similar to that of a blowlamp which will be unheard in a busy workshop. Since there are no nozzles in the system there can be no risk of blockage from foreign bodies in the oil. As well as waste oil it can operate on gas oil at Is. 3d. a gal., which gives an operation cost of 9.4d. per hr. Waste oil uses 11 gal. per hr.

Suppliers: Brown and Tawse Plant Ltd., Ambrose St., West Gorton, Manchester 12. Price: £145.
