/LANS to carry all its long-haul goods between London and Scotland eventually by rail were ferred to by Mr. John Cooper, Scottish director Tartan Arrow Service Ltd., London, when it plied in Edinburgh on Tuesday for an A licence :rease of five vehicles.
The application was granted by the Scottish censing Authority, Mr. A. B. Birnie. Original jector was Atlas Express Ltd.
Mr. Birnie was told that, after many delays, first "Tartan Arrow train" had run from mdon to Glasgow on the day before the hearing. Mr. M. H. Jackson Lipkin, for Tartan Arrow, id that Atlas Express was present only to Ike sure that the five vehicles asked for was : correct figure. He read letters of support nn customers of Tartan Arrow who had atHied an earlier hearing in Edinburgh on October , but were not called upon to testify at that aring.
Mr. Jackson Lipkin also submitted documents owing failures in collection and in delivery. explained that Tartan Arrow ran a blue reels service which guaranteed next-day livery: where this was not effective Tartan Tow had to refund all the carriage charges in 1-in other words the service was free, he said. October there had been 14 such failures in days. On one occasion Tartan Arrow had ntacted 30 sub-contractors without being able get help.
In cross-examination by Mr. J. S. A. Buchan, for Atlas Express, Mr. Cooper agreed that irtan Arrow had 23 vehicles authorized in otland of which three were at present susnded.
