Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Callag

han, gave a clear indication in the Commons last week that the Government would recommend a decimal currency system based on the pound-cent.

He announced that a White Paper on the conversion would be published on December 12. He said that the most convenient date to introduce decimal currency would be February 1971. It was important to give trade, industry and commerce as well as firms which manufactured machines "a reasonable time in which to change over".

Mr. Eric Lubbock (Orpington, Lib.) pointed out that coin-operated machines were still continuing to be made using existing coin sizes. This was a waste of resources.

Said Mr. Callaghan "Whether there has been a waste of resources will depend on what the size of the new coins is".
