THE quickest way to measure falling produc tion and trade was by the amount of transport that was required to carry it, said Mr. Roger Gresham Cooke (Tory, Twickenham) during last week's economics debate in the Commons.
Significant was the 14 per cent fall in the traffic figure of British Road Services during the past four weeks. BRS estimated that four per cent was due to trouble in the motor trade and 10 per cent to trade recession problems.
It had given notice to the union that it was thinking of declaring redundant about 800 of its 10,000 drivers, or nearly 10 per cent.
BRS Men Strike: A 24 hour strike by 100 drivers and staff at the BRS Cheapside, Birmingham depot, ended on Wednesday. It was in protest against a management plan to close the depot and move the work to new premises at Oldbury. The dispute is to be referred to the BRS national staff council.
