• 1-1 A NEW eight-wheeled chassis with a

set-back engine and a wheelbase of only 13 ft. 7 in., 1 ft. shorter than that of the company's normal tipper chassis, has been built by E.R.F., Ltd., Sandbach. Two of these vehicles have been ordered by •Wingham Engineering Co., Ltd., Wingham.

The design is intended to take a 6-cu.-yd. high-discharge truck mixer with hydraulic drive, manufactured by Ransomes and Rapier, Ltd., Ipswich. Wingham Engineering are using heavy ballast, and therefore consider it necessary to have an eight-wheeler. The operating weight will be approximately 22 tons.

The engine has been set back to allow a Deri-Sine hydraulic pump unit to be mounted at the front where it is driven by the crankshaft. This avoids the

More Arties for Metal Box

THEpolicy of the Metal Box Co. is to develop articulation, said Mr. Cornish, transport manager at the company's Perrywood, Worcester, works at a sitting of the West Midlands Licensing Authority. He was giving evidence in support of applications by Mr. A. G. Taylor and by Lockyer's Transport, Ltd., in each case to add one articulated vehicle on B licence, mainly to improve the shunting which they do for Metal Box between its stores in and near Worcester.

Mr, Cornish said that he expected shortly to take delivery of five tractors and eight trailers for use in the company's own fleet.

The applications were granted.

TOO SMALL FOR B.R.S. THE feeling that British Road Services I did not want small consignments was expressed by several crofter witnesses at a sitting of the Scottish Licensing Authority at Glasgow. Mr. Archibald McT. Young, of Ballachulish, was applying for two vehicles on B variation, and no fewer than 47 crofters gave evidence of the loss of rail connections, the difficulties of arranging home transport from markets, and the inconvenience of marketing cattle, because of lack of transport.

Mr. W. F. Quin approved the application.

ONE-MAN BUSES

ROTHERHAM Corporation transport department have reached agreement with union officials on the operation of one-man buses on those parts of the Harworth and Worksop routes which are beyond Maltby. It has been recommended that this service should be introduced between Maltby and Harworth, and Maltby and Worksop, in accordance with revised time-tables, and that the question of continuing the service should be reviewed after six months' operation.

c 10 vulnerable and unsightly projection of the pump beyond the body line. A second pump is mounted behind the cab, and is driven by a full pevver take-off from the David Brown 10-speed gearbox.

A Ransomes and Rapier spokesman described the operation of the mixer to The Commercial Motor. The forward pump is used to slowly rotate the drum holding the mixture while the lorry is under way. This prevents the segregation of particles of the cement whilst it is en route to the plant. Mixing, charging and discharging are carried out only when the lorry is stationary, and then by a combination of both pumps because a higher rate of rotation than can be given by a single pump is required to thoroughly mix or eject the cement. The mixture may be transported dry batch, shrinkmixed or pre-mixed.
