rtA COMMITTEE of inquiry has cleared Mr. A. Burton, general
• manager of West Hartlepool Transport Department, of charges of having, after tenders had been opened for buying scrap copper wire, written to.a tenderer asking for a better price. . Cl1r. T. Andrews, a former chairman of the transport committee, who made the allegations, has unreservedly withdrawn them.
• The report of the inquiry Stated that in May, 1953, tenders were obtained for buying scrap copper from the corporation. Seven scrap merchants tendered, but at a meeting of the transport committee Mr. Burton reported that he had received an additional offer, much higher than those of the merchants, from British Insulated Callender's Cables, Ltd.
With the then chairman's approval, Mr. Burton got into touch with the company and their offer was accepted. The inquiry committee said that the merchants' tenders were not opened before the meeting of the transport committee.
