WORKERS' cheap fares charged by VV Newcastle Transport Departmentwere formally abolished last week by the Northern•Licensing Authority. The corporation did not oppose the proposal, which was made on the Authority's own initiative.

After hearing objections by Tynemouth Corporation, Newcastle and District Trades Council and several trades unions, the chairman, Mr. L A. T. Hanlon, said the Authority had. to regard the public interest as a whole. and believed that the burden should be spread, as far as possible, on the entire fare-paying public.

It is expected that the concession rates will end in about three weeks' time.

Newcastle Transport Committee are to consider raising the age limit for

half-fares from 14 to 15 years. At present, children up to 15 are allowed. to travel at half-fare only on school journeys.

They are also considering raising the age minimum for free travel on motorbuses for children accompanied by an adult from three to five years. The minimum on trolleybiases is already five years.
