Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I WAS extremely interested to listen to David Wickens, director of Severn Trent Water, commenting on the shortage of trained LGV drivers (BBC's Today programme, Radio 4,26 July 2007).

Asked why strategically placed water bowsers in and around the flood-affected areas of Gloucester did not appear to be being topped up three to five times a day, he cited, among other reasons, the shortage of trained LGV drivers to drive tankers to the bowsers.

Statistics suggest the perceived crisis in the number of LGV drivers doesn't exist. Perhaps recently undertaken surveys didn't take account of Mr Wickens' concerns at the very real crisis being endured by the inhabitants of Gloucester and surrounding areas. The reality appears to be that our industry is creaking at its seams when an emergency befalls us.

Once again, as if we needed reminding, the very existence of the logistics industry in the UK doesn't revolve around putting freight on railways, seaways or canals, but on a highly trained and professional workforce of LGV drivers. These individuals are the lifeblood of our economy. Ask anyone who is currently short of the very 'elixir of life'.
