Ei Press announcements by the Road Haulage Association are being considered to encourage customers to pay operators higher rates because of increased costs.
The RHA already provides quarterly break-downs of wage, fuel and vehicle price rises for its members as a guide to setting rates.
But now its North Eastern district is looking at ways of putting these across to hauliers' clients via the construction and other trade press.
The RHA is banned from setting standard rates following an Office of Fair Trading ruling in the early 1980s, which outlawed its benchmark system for certain types of job.
The association could face High Court action if it is seen to advise its members too closely on what to charge.
