Senator Charlie MacDonald of Co Laois has taken the Republic's Minister of Finance Albert Reynolds for a gentle test drive at 145km.lh (90mph) in a Mercedes powered by Crisp 'n' Dry from a local cash 'n' carry.
The car is reported to have run beautifully, but left a distinct smell of chips.
The inventor Ludwig Elsbett has chosen a site at Tullamore, Co Offaly to produce the veggimotor and is looking for .£4m in government aid.
The project expects to create 500 jobs by 1994. Vegetable oil emits no noxious substances.
