Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Go-Ahead Northern, which threatened to axe 350 jobs unless staff accepted local pay and condition negotiations, has clinched its first pay deal (CM 31 May 6 June).

The South Shields depot, which employs 100 drivers and was one of three loss-making operations which Go-Ahead threatened to close, accepted a package which includes a 24.11 hourly rate; an upaid 30-minute meal break; no enhanced rates of pay for overtime; and holiday rates the same as basic.

Terry Hammond of the Transport & General Workers' Union says the deal "sounds awful", but says "it's easy for me to sit here secure in my job and comment — I understand the situation they are confronted with".

He adds: "Management is undermining the union by going direct to depots with proposals. The union is seeking to minimise the detrimental effect across the company and stop these depot deals."
