• Mercedes-Benz looks set to provide one of the major attractions at the Birmingham Motor Show next month by unveiling its revamped range of 17-tonners.
Continental showgoers had the first glimpse of the revised two-axle rigid at the Amsterdam Show earlier this year, and it is now likely that Mercedes will use the NEC Show to launch its new middleweight in the UK, with sales starting immediately.
Details are limited at present, but British hauliers can expect the 1617, which has been sold in its current form since 1984, to be replaced by the 1717 and the 1720.
Much of the technology of the newcomers is derived from the Powerliner 2 range of tractors, and should include an updated cab, automatic chassis lubrication, and the option of electronic anti-lock and antiskid equipment.
Mercedes currently holds third place in the 17-tonne market behind Leyland Daf and Iveco Ford, and will be hoping that the new duo can improve on that position, especially as the company has been without a contender in the 150kVv' (200hp)-plus category.
The Mercedes-Benz stand should also include the company's full range of tractive units, providing many visitors with their first chance to look at the lightweight vee-sixpowered 1733 tractor which is a recent arrival on the UK market. Other comparatively new models on show include the 310D and 410D, the latest five-cylinder additions to Mercedes' heavyweight panel van range.
Tippermen, however, should not expect any surprises, for sources indicate that the long awaited replacements for the 2421 6x4 and 3025 8x4 multiwheelers are not ready to make their debut in Birmingham. Current indications are that the new heavyweights, which are believed to be updated on similar lines to the 17-tonners, will not see the light of day until 1991.
