EIGHTEEN lorry drivers who made false entries in their record books while employed by WBS Transport Limited, of Plough Way, London SEIB, were fined a total of £810 at Tower Bridge Magistrates Court last Monday and ordered to pay costs which totalled £350.

For the Departryient of Transport, Martin Bentley, said traffic examiners had noted the vehicles last May and the offences were discovered when the drivers records were examined later.

Drivers of goods vehicles were required to put details of their hours of work, mileage and each event in their day's work in a record book, said Mr Bentley, and the system was aimed at preventing fatigue.

But seventeen drivers admitted making false entries and failing to keep the required details, and some of them also pleaded guilty to exceeding permitted hours and not taking rest breaks after 51/2 hours of continuous work, as required by law.

Peter Holman, Chilton Grove, Deptford SE8 was fined a total of £40; Joseph Davis, Fordel Road, Catford SE6 was fined £55; Frank Busby, Whitefoot Lane, Bromley was fined £45; Barry Walker, Flamborough House, Peckham SE5 was fined £35; Michael Cook, Nelson, Upper Belveder, Kent was fined £55 and £25 for four separate but similar offences; and Stephen Wickenden, Langdale Road, SE10 was fined a total of £70.

Thomas Mullins, of St James Crescent, Stockwell SE9, who denied three offences was found guilty by the magistrates. He was fined £15 for exceeding working day, £5 for not entering details and £20 for false entry. He was also ordered to pay £20 costs.

Charges against a nineteenth defendant were dismissed by the magistrates — Delroy Wiiliems, of Pepys Estate, Longshore Road SE8 had denied failing to enter details and false entry.

Proceedings against the company were adjourned until December.
