MAJOR motorway schemes in Glasgow have been delayed and cancelled by Scottish Secretary George Younger in a package of alterations to Strathclyde Region's structure plan.
The main casualties are an expressway connection with the north side of the Clyde Tunnel, which has been dropped completely, and the east and south flanks of the M8 inner ring route which have been halted temporarily at least.
Freight Transport Association Scottish controller Gordon Dougall is particularly disappointed by the decision to axe the £70m ring route extensions, and says these will lead to congestion on existing sections of urban motorway.
He has also told Mr Younger that industrial regeneration in Glasgow's East End will be put at risk by the delayed road improvements.
