THE Cotton Trucking Co Ltd of East London which started operations as transport and warehousing contractors 15 months ago, took delivery of its first TIR tilt trailer this week. Until now, the company has been running 25 rented trailers to Northern Europe, unaccompanied, but now plans accompanied services to begin in the autumn. The trailer was purpose-built by Cohen (Transport Designs) Ltd of Gillingham, Kent, to TIR specifications. It is fitted with a series of nine lightweight roof-gates fitted transversely across the trailer. These, it is claimed, replaced over 50 timber boards, and cross-bows on traditional tilt trailers.
The tilt cover is fitted with 14 leather straps, so that the roof panel can be secured to the header rails, headboard and tailboard. The dropsides are made of aluminium, and according to Cohen are produced at almost the same cost as plywood. The tilts, while complying with TIR regulations, are designed with ventilation ports for use in the hotter climates of Southern Europe. The side-cape locking device is a lever action which secures the cape to the body stanchion.
