ment of Government Transport In Sydney, New South Wales, had ordered 200 Leyland Atlantean double-deckers. No details were given about the bodywork to e fitted to these buses. I understood tha the Department was gradually replacing double-decker buses with singledeckers. Has there been a change of policy?
ANo order has yet been placed for the bodies of the new Atlanteans for Syd ey but it is understood that they will be am ng. the most modern double-deckers in the world, and will feature a double door kayo t. For some time it has seemed that the pali y of the Department was to gradually replace double-deckers, This led to strong pressure from the Australian trade press last year for the NSW Department of Government Transport to introduce modern doubledeckers similar to those being introduced in Great Britain and on the Continent.
It is possibly as a result of this publicity that the Department has had a change of heart. However, it is worth noting that the fleet at Jun ii 30 this year comprised 840 singledecker buses and 745 double-deckers so that a considerable proportion of the services are still operated by double-deckers.
