Small diesels
Two small-size diesel engines introduced into the UK by Mag Engines Ltd. are suitable for industrial use such as providing power for elevators, blowers, small trucks, dumpers, pumps, tools, lifts, generators and welding equipment.
The single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled overhead valve engines are the 577 c.c. 1057 DRT producing 12.5 bhp at 3,000 rpm and the 673 c.c. 1067 DRT, giving 15 bhp at 3,000 rpm. Bore and stroke for the 1057 DRT are 88mm and 95mm respectively, and 95mm and 95mm for the 1067 DRT.
The engines have a compression ratio of 17 to 1 and are air-cooled by a flywheel blower with a cooling-air screen, which is easily accessible for quick cleaning. A counterbalance weight running contrary to the crankshaft reduces vibration. Both engines without dynamo, starter and fuel tank have the comparatively low weight of 1771b, and with dynamo and starter, weigh 210Ib.
Recommended operating speed is 1,500 to 3,000 rpm with an idling speed of 800 rpm, and maximum torque at 2,000 rpm is 23 ft.lb for the smaller engine and 29 ft.lb for the larger.
Accessories include an electric starter, dynamo, changeable oil filter, various exhaust systems and remote control for throttle and adjustable centrifugal speed governor. Other features include gear pump lubrication system, aluminium crankcase and cylinder head, oil bath air cleaner and close-grained cast-iron cylinder, which can be re-bored four times.
High-capacity steel backed sleeve-type bearings are fitted. Valve clearance is adjusted by screws on the rocker arms. The injection pump has an easy-start device and there is a multi-hole injection nozzle.
Capacity of the fuel tank is 14 pints and it has a built-in fuel filter. Where the tank is not an integral part of the engine, a separate filter can be fixed on the crankcase. The engines are manufactured by Saurer of Arbon, Switzerland, under agreement with Motosacoche of Geneva.

Plasma-flame spray
Metco Ltd. has developed plasma-flame spraying equipment that has widened the range of materials that can be deposited on the treated surface and provides an improved spray rate. Although the plasma flame has a very high temperature in the vicinity of the gun nozzle, very little heat is carried over to the component being sprayed. Distortion of the component and metallurgical changes in the base metal are not therefore produced.
Refractory materials that are not melted by conventional flames can be sprayed with the gun. Materials that can be sprayed include tungsten, tungsten carbide, chromium oxide, alumina and zirconia. Stainless steel, aluminium and copper can also be handled by the gun. Thickness can be closely controlled and wastage of high-grade materials is thus reduced to a minimum.

Hydraulic power units
Comprising a vertically mounted electric motor and a submerged hydraulic pump assembly in each case, two hydraulic power packs have been announced by Aden Hydraulics Ltd. One is known as the Mini, has a capacity of 5gal and is powered by a 3 hp motor; the other, the Minor has a 10 hp motor and a capacity of 10gal. Details include a relief valve built into the porting manifold, pressure gauge. oil-level gauge, breather, suction strainer and micronic return-line filter. The filter incorporates a visual contamination indicator. Both the Mini and Minor may be used as a free-standing unit or as an integral part of a machine.

Lightweight couplings
The Automotive Products Group has announced that the 4in. version of the new Lockheed-Avery Perfekt coupling now officially complies with British Standard Specification 2464 (Part 3). This coupling is one of three Perfekt units, the two others having diameters of 24-in. and 6in. It is being applied extensively to road and rail tankers and to bulk-handling installations, notably for the handling of petroleum products. • The Perfekt coupling is of the twist-lock type and its operating range extends from a high degree of vacuum to a pressure of 200 p.s.i. The 4in. coupling is available with a filter cone insert having a filtration rating of 75 microns.

Electric tractor
From the Wessex range comes a tractor specifically designed for towing any type of trailer from loading to unloading points. Lt has the performance to do the job quickly and efficiently; safety, to lessen risks to both operator and personnel; arid driver comfort, to increase productivity by reducing fatigue. Its total length is 73in., width 36iin., and turning radius 68in. The truck's towing capacity is 7 tons.
Storage battery electric power in conjunction with the Wessex Carbon Pile speed control provides smooth, stepless acceleration from stationary until full-speed is attained. The amount of power required can be varied to suit the load and operating conditions.
The overall dimensions have been minimized to give maximum manoeuvrability and with its quiet, fume-free operation it is ideal for indoor use. A three-position tow hitch is fitted to give maximum tractive effort regardless of the type of trailer being towed. Dual braking-systems comprising hydraulic foot brakes and mechanical hand brake are fitted and operate independently.
In order to lessen operator fatigue a fully adjustable, contoured driving seat with a built-in shock absorber is fitted. The operator has clear entrance to the driving seat from both sides of the truck and standard automotive foot controls are used. The design of the truck provides excellent all-round visibility, and a clear view of the rear hitch. Lifting eyes are provided on the battery for rapid, easy removal and all major parts are easily accessible for maintenance. The truck is covered by the Wessex guarantee and backed by the nationwide Wessex Service Division.
Full specification and demonstrations are available from the manufacturers, Wessex Industries (Poole) Ltd„ Market Street, Poole, Dorset.
Upholstery cleaner
A multi-purpose spray-on and wipe-off upholstery cleaner has been announced by Porzelack Ltd. It can also be used for cleaning glass and rubber surfaces, including the surface of tyres, head linings, door linings. carpets and windows Made by: Porzelack Ltd., 148 Townsend Lane, Liverpool.
Drum lifting tongs
A device designed for lifting drums in a vertical position in conjunction with an overhead hoist has been produced by Powell and Co. A four-tong mechanism grips the drum under the top rim by means of four evenly spaced steel pads. In addition to ensuring safe handling, the device facilitates placement of the drums in the minimum space.
The drum tongs are suitable for handling drums of the normal type with a capacity of 40 to 50 imperial gallons.

Box tippler
An hydraulic tippler mechanism has been developed by the Cranford Engineering Co. which enables a box or container to be upended to discharge its contents into a hopper. A rubber belt in the base of the hopper delivers the material to an elevator, the belt being driven by a variable-speed motor. The tippler has a capacity of 25cwt while the capacity of the hopper is 30cwt. A lift up to 12ft is provided by the elevator.

Plastics report
A working party of the British Plastics Federation has been studying the phenonema of fatigue and creep in glass-reinforced plastics and has produced a report that covers their investigations and includes a critical survey of published data. The Federation emphasizes that the report will help engineers to assess two properties of reinforced plastics that have become of increasing importance in recent years. The first of these properties is fatigue, which is the effect of cyclic loading on a component and the second is creep, which produces a slow dimensional change under loading. Typically, an engineer has no means of evaluating these properties.

Fifth-wheel coupling
From September all Ford D Series tractive units including the successful D1000 24and 28-ton g.c.w. models will be marketed with a fifth-wheel coupling package as a regular production option.
The fifth-wheel plate is mounted on a steel sub-frame of Ford design to spread the trailer load evenly over a large area of the chassis frame. The plate articulates to an angle of plus or minus 8deg and is of conventional design mounted on trunnions postitioned in front of the coupling centre. This ensures that it always angles towards the rear, eliminating the possibility of damage through attempting to connect a trailer with the coupling angled forward.
On D series phase 1 models, the option will have a retail price of £140 and the retail price for phase II models will be £145,
