Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• In tests carried out recently oil-extended natural rubber tyres produced 30 per cent more grip than their equivalent synthetic rubber counterparts, it is claimed. The tests also showed that the o.e.n.r. treads out-performed studded synthetic rubber tyres when operating on identical surfaces.

The tests were carried out by the Malayan Rubber Fund Board technical advisory service officers and the first part of their journey—Aachen to Hamburg—was made in near-freezing conditions at speeds up to 90 mph. From Hamburg to Fredrickshavn in Denmark, wet and slushy roads were encountered and in Oslo deep snow. In all the conditions throughout the journey the o.e.n.r. treads proved satisfactory, restarts on steep hills in snow being made without difficulty.

A full report of the journey can be read in the magazine (Vol 21, No. 2) of the Natural Rubber Producers Research Association, 19 Buckingham St., London, WC2.
