• An application for an increase in fares made by the Thames Valley Traction Co. Ltd. was rejected last week by the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners because, they claimed, the increase would give the company too high a profit margin. The Commissioners asked Thames Valley to review its concessionary fares with a view to making economies, and to extend the scope of one-man operation. The company should then re-apply with a fares scale which would give a "lower yield".
A spokesman for Thames Valley told CM on Friday that the company had started immediately to look at the question of concessionary fares. With regard to o-m-o, he stated that it had a programme for the extension of such services during the next two years when 25 additional one-man buses would be introduced. The spokesman added that he thought the application had been a fair one. Although 37 local authorities had objected, only two were represented at the hearing.
The fares increase applied for was for a id increase on 5d, 6d, 8d, and 10d fares and for a 2d increase on all fares above 1s Od.
