• After successfully building up a haulage business over five years, a Lancashire operator sought to extend his A-licence in Preston on Tuesday so that he could run a nightly general goods trunk service to Bristol and South Wales. BRS (Parcels) Ltd. and BR were objecting.
For the applicant. Dickinson Transport (Rossendale) Ltd.. Mr. J. A. Backhouse said the grant of the new licence with the surrender of the old, would have the effect of adding two vans as well as adding two customers ta the normal user and general goods on the Welsh run.
Since it began in 1963, business had increased rapidly, said Mr. G. Dickinson, managing director. In 1966 the turnover was £29,000; in 1967, £48.000, and for the first six months of 1968 it was already £34,500. He had started operating a 24-hour Lancashire /S. Wales service but, due to shortage of vehicles, deliveries could take four to five days.
Mr. R. Whittaker. director, Starkstrom Co. Ltd., said BRS Trunk and Parcels Services were used. but for a specialized service eliminating transshipment and extensive packing, Dickinson's vehicles were employed. Better delivery times were required: two days to South Wales as against the seven to nine days experienced in t'he past.
His company was now in the hands of a receiver and manager but when more capital had been obtained it would be increasing production, said Mr. ' W. Harrison, transport manager, Baxenden Chemical Co. Ltd. Recently his own van had had to rush emergency supplies to feed customers' production lines when Dickinson failed to send vehicles.
Mr. M. E. Raine, assistant manager, J. Warburton Ltd., said textile sales had remained high during the summer, a traditionally slack period and a corresponding increase for the latter half of the year was expected.
BRS (Parcels) Ltd.. Burnley. ran a daily service to Bristol and Cardiff, said the branch manager, Mr. J. Dean. His company had accounts with 10 of the customers mentioned by the applicant.
The North Western deputy LA, Mr. A. H. JollifTee. reserved his decision.
