Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Because of higher operating costs, the Northern General Transport Co. received authority in Newcastle upon Tyne last week to increase 56 per cent of its fares from the end of the month.

Fares up to 6d will remain unchanged but those over 6d will increase by up to 2d, under an application approved by the Northern Area Traffic Commissioners.

Mr. J. L. R. Croft, for Northern, said increased costs amounted to £114,000 and the increases would bring in £87,000. But because of new wage demands he would be "foolishly optimistic" to suggest that the increases could be followed by a long period of fare stability.

The Commissioners' chairman, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, said he was satisfied that the application was correct. Northern had been hit by increases beyond its control, mostly connected with pay.

An application by Venture Transport, of Newcastle, to increase its fares under 8d by ld and those over 8d by 2d was also granted.
