at Dover Eastern Docks with 14 illegal immigrants hidden behind a load of flowers has been cleared by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court. Rene Blok, who denied the offence of being knowingly concerned, walked free. Driver Cornelius Vermeer pleaded guilty to the offence in January and is serving two-and-a-half years in jail.
In the early hours of 27 September the pair arrived at Dover on a ferry from Calais. The vehicle was stopped by customs officers who found 12 male and two female Chinese illegal immigrants in the back. Blok claimed: "When we were stopped at Dover by customs I was not aware that the people were there—I knew nothing about it."
