• Roads and Traffic Minister Christopher Chope was punched in the face several times last week while speaking to voters in his Southampton Itchin constituency.
Duffy's role
• The Road Haulage Association's Bob Duffy is the new chairman of a European Commission committee on road transport. The body comprises haulage representatives together with EC officials.
TRRL reborn
• The Transport Road Research Laboratory has been relaunched as an executive agency, and renamed the Transport Research Laboratory. It aims to increase its work for non-Government customers.
No show
• The Road Haulage Association has axed Transcon, its first general haulage exhibition and conference, which was to have been held on 26 June, because three exhibitors pulled out. It hopes to re-launch it in 1994.
Charity delays
• Drivers carrying relief supplies into Romania continue to face long delays at the Hungarian and Romanian borders. Customs officers are sticking strictly to procedures because they fear an influx of black market goods.
Terminal tussle
• The Department of Transport is to fight British Rail's plan to build a Channel Tunnel freight terminal in West Yorkshire because it would increase truck traffic on nearby roads.
