The policy of opposition to newcomers to the industry should be rigidly enforced, declared Mr. F. G. Curtis, at the annual supper of A.R.O. Plymouth Sub-area, last week.
Mr. R. W. Sewill, national director, who was the principal guest, reminded his hearers that the difficulty of objections to licence renewals had still to be overcome. He spoke of the national fighting fund, which was being raised by a levy of is. per vehicle for contesting cases of national importance. He added that the Parliamentary Road Group was becoming much stronger and was now bringing up matters that would never have had a hearing before.
Other speakers were Messrs. C. H. Kapman, vice-chairman of the subarea; J. Metcalfe ; R. W. Fennarnore, sub-area secretary ; W. Baker; W. J. Thompson; K. G. Powell, sub-area organizer ; J. R. F. Bradford ; E. King and Humphrey Cooke.
Windfall for A.R.O.
We understand that the liquidation of the Road Haulage Association has now been completed, and a sum of over £2,000 has been handed to A.R.O. by the liquidator. At a meeting of the management committee of that Association, last Monday. it was also announced that a further reserve of approximately £800 had been built up since the beginning of this year.
New Officials for C.M.U.A.
Mr. F. F. Fowler has been appointed chairman of the London and Home Counties Division of the C.M.U.A. for
the ensuing 12 months. Mr. F. J. Speight is to be vice-chairman, whilst the honorary treasurer of the division will be Mr. Christopher Smith.
